A metal catalyst, for example the Pt/C fuel cell catalyst, which we propose to study, will consist of metal particle supported on an oxide or carbon. On such a catalyst spillover of hydrogen is a general phenomenon. Dihydrogen dissociates on the metal, and hydrogen atoms migrate, or spill over, to the support generating a pool of atomic hydrogen available for chemistry. Spillover hydrogen is implicated in many catalytic reactions but conventional spectroscopic and NMR techniques have yet to provide direct detection of the species being spilled over. Neutron scattering and methods are ideal for characterising and quantifying hydrogenic species: recent improvements in neutron scattering methods at ISIS, improved sensitivity and resolution, provide new opportunities for chemistry. According we propose to use the ISIS eVs (neutron Compton scattering) and TOSCA (inelastic scattering) spectrometers to detect and measure spillover hydrogen under realistic conditions, a long-standing and challenging problem in fundamental applied catalysis. We shall determine the mode of binding and the relative concentrations of hydrogen molecules and atoms interacting with, and binding to, the metal and support components of the catalyst.
