Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal addresses the engineering issues of how to manoeuvre small satellites into preferred orbital configurations autonomously using onboard thrusters. The proposal seeks to exploit the opportunity to use the experimental satellite UoSAT-12 to develop new modelling systems for combined attitude and orbit control. It exploits new numerical techniques which make accessible onboard processing of the complex dynamics of a satellite in real time. The project is timely as UoSAT-12 was successfully launched on 21 April this year and all systems are functioning extremely well. The propulsion system is predicted to last for between 2 to 3 years from launch which matches the projects duration. The principal objective of this proposal is to exploit the UoSAT-12 opportunity to perform an extensive set of experiments exploring the coupling between attitude and orbital parameters during manoeuvres. Valuable data will be collected and incorporated into models of manoeuvre uncertainty.Mathematical models for the complex dynamics during such manoeuvres of the satellite will be developed to enable attitude and orbit manoeuvres as a cuntion of orbital phase. Algorithms for real time estimation will be developed and tested on UoSAT-12 to evaluate their use for spacecraft control in the space environment.
