Large and complex macro-molecular protein and nucleic acid assemblies are increasingly being recognised as the focal point for much of the chemistry in biological systems no molecule acts on its own. As biologists are becoming able to create macromolecular assemblies of direct biological relevance in a controlled and reproducible manner the available standard techniques for characterising them are insufficient either due to artefacts or limited resolution. Thus, progress in a number of exciting biological areas is hindered by absence of appropriate techniques and expertise to develop new methods in biology departments. Only collaborations between biologists and biophysical chemists will enable key biological problems to be solved.The aim of the proposal is to enable collaboration between physical chemists, biophysicists, biologists and an instrumentation engineer all of whom are currently working towards addressing the problem of how structurally to characterise complex molecular assemblies in quite different contexts. The network will build on existing relationships as well as develop new initiatives. It will result in equipment and method development, technology transfer in addition to directly addressing the issue of characterising large and complex biological macromolecular systems.
