Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research proposal addresses a range of new concepts in the applications of in-fibre Bragg gratings to instrumentation and sensors. Device concepts for a number of medical sensors are identified based on initial, collaborative experiments with clinicians. Several new techniques for strain, pressure and load sensing using long period gratings are specified offering very high sensitivity and directional sensing properties. Extension to chemical sensing is also proposed. New single device architectures are included, as are array concepts. A new range of devices based on multiple-core fibre is proposed. Users of gratings in wavelength-selective fibre optic instrumentation is embraced in collaboration with our industrial sponsor. The major elements of the fabrication infrastructure are already in place, and this proposal seeks the additional items of equipment necessary to explore the full range of device concepts identified above.
