Summary on Grant Application Form
At Lancaster University, new varieties of scanning probe microscopy have been pioneered and combined with analytical techniques such as thermal analysis. Collaboration between physicists, chemists and biologists has enabled us to undertake a number of current funded projects. However, our existing instruments are heavily overloaded, being used in addition for continuing instrumental development work. We now seek funding for two further instruments which would complete the infrastructure needed to support dedicated work on future specific research projects. These would include:(a) atomic force microscope (AFM) studies of amyloid fibrils, protofibrils and inhibitors of amyloid aggregation;(b) the use of affinity imaging and micro-thermal analysis to study bioadhesion and biofouling interactions;(c) scanning thermal microscopy and Infra-red Spectroscopy with Scanning Microscopy for work on metabolic activity of individual plant cells; and (d) on electromigation studies; and(e) AFM studies of semiconductor quantum dots, for LEDs and diode lasers.
