Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research proposal brings together the T H Huxley School of Environment, Earth Science and Engineering, the Mathematics Department, the Centr efor Petroleum Studies and the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the formation of a substantially cost-effective focus for collaborative research in modelling complex systems. These systems lie in the fields of Mathematics, Applied Earth Sciences and Engineering,a nd the majority have a complex three dimensional, transient nature with significant industrial and scientific relevance. The focus of this research is the formation of a cost-effective parallel supercomputer through exploiting a successful demonstration we have made via workstations connected by very high-speed networks. This will increase speed and memory by about one and two orders of magnitude respectively. Systems where crucial research and applications advances will be made possible include: multi-phase flow (fluidised beds), ocean flows (for coastal civil engineering), image reconstruction using parallel neural networks (oil and gas), 3D full wave-field inversion (oil and gas), high-temperature superconductors and computational mechanics in large-scale design.
