Summary on Grant Application Form |
The major aim of the proposed research is the design, construction, characterisation and commissioning of a novel type of germanium detector, primarily for use in nuclear spectroscopy research. The use of a highly segmented detector should allow a high degree of position identification of gamma-ray interactions within the detector. This, in turn, will result in a significant improvement in the spectral quality possible with current solid state spectrometers, by increasing the signal to noise (via the collection of Compton scattered events) and by improving the effective energy resolution (via more accurate Doppler corrections for gamma-rays originating from fast moving radioactive sources). The developments envisaged will not only be widely applicable in fundamental nuclear structure physics research, but will also have useful consequences for those who use arrays of germanium detectors to monitor the environmental effects of radiation such as those working in the disposal of nuclear waste.
