Summary on Grant Application Form
Understanding the dynamic properties of unconsolidated sediments is of fundamental importance to geotechnical engineering and seafloor environmental studies: eg cyclic loading of soils due to earthquakes and heavy transport vehicles; remote characterisation of seafloor sediments and monitoring of submarine slopes using seismo-acoustic methods. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Southampton Oceanography Centre have built strong links with industrial partners and are now seeking to pool their expertise and resources to provide the comprehensive research capability needed to address problems facing the environmental, construction and transport sectors. This proposal requests funding for several key items of research equipment to enhance the existing facilities available to researchers within the two groups, and to establish a world-class centre for geo-environmental studies.
