Summary on Grant Application Form
An Area detector X-ray system is sought to aid characterisation of:(i) Low-valent metal fluorides: Although single crystal X-ray characterisations have been possible on the more stable complexes in this area, small crystal size, twinning, low thermal stability and high chemical reactivity have hampered their study using an existing four-circle diffractometer;(ii) Fluorous biphase catalysis: A broad range of ligand systems compatible with the industrially and environmentally significant fluorous biphase catalytic approach have been prepared. Problems of disorder associated with the long perfluoroalkyl substituents leads to crystals with unusually large mosaicity and very large unit cells which are difficult to solve and require lengthy data collections on a conventional serial diffractomer;(iii) Novel Compounds with New Electro-optic Properties: Films of complexes based on tetrathiafulvalene and copper maleonitrile show exciting electro-optical properties. Crystals obtained so far show the presence of incommensurate lattices. Collection of data based on these samples is impractical with our conventional diffractometer due to the presence of a large superlattice.
