Financial support is being sought to purchase a Confocal Laser Scanning Raman Microscope for use in a multidisciplinary, multi-sector research programme encompassing the principal element of:* Characterisation of the degradation of polymeric systems used for high voltage insulationThe emphasis of the research is to understand the mechanisms of ageing and their influences on remnant life through the physical and chemical characterisation of the species involved in the degradation processes. The combined application of laser confocal and Raman imaging to all these areas is both uniquely powerful and entirely novel. Besides broadening and enhancing the capabilities of research groups from two universities, new avenues of research would open up, attracting new funding and great co-operation from UK industry.
