Summary on Grant Application Form |
This application is for a particle image velocimetry system (PIV) that will allow the study of gas particle motion within pipes and through pipe boundaries. The pipes and their boundaries are representative of those found in the intake and exhaust systems of internal combustion engines. In such systems the gas motion is highly unsteady; approaching sonic velocity in one direction and milliseconds later reversing direction. By studying such flow phenomena, greater insight will be gained into the flow processes occurring, allowing more accurate and comprehensive mathematical models to be developed. In turn, this will ikmprove the accuracy with which engine performance can be predicted, accelerating the design process and improving the final products performance, while minimising the emission of noise and of noxious exhaust gases.
