Summary on Grant Application Form |
Recent experiments at Orsay in France have shown that one can switch the alignment rapidly between two bistable states in a nematic liquid crystal cell employing an electric field and certain weak surface alignments. This discovery has potential for fast switching display applications, including TV. In one of the bistable states the alignment is uniform, but in the other it is distorted in a twist deformation. The switching is achieved by using electric fields of suitable strength, straightforwardly, from twist to uniform, but in the reverse direction by a more complex mechanism in which induced flow plays an important role. This proposal seeks to obtain a sound understanding of the latter transition by solving the relevant equations of a mathematical model for these materials. Keywords describing research area of proposalContinuum Mechanics, Mathematical Physics, Optoelectronic Devices
