Coronary artery disease remains the major cause of mortality and morbidity in the industrialised world despite significant advances in its prevention. Imaging of the coronary arteries is important to the management of coronary artery disease. Despite recent advances in MR coronary angiography, reliable and consistent imaging of the coronary arteries remains difficult because physiological motion, coupled with the small size and tortuous nature of the coronary vessels, presents unusual challenges to all MR coronary imaging techniques. The current approaches of using disphragmatic navigator echoes for respiratory gating with free-breathing substantially prolongs the imaging time, thus limiting the coverage of the coronary arteries within each examination. The primary aim of this proposal is to develop a localised 3D coronary imaging technique which is capable of adaptively tracking the motion of the heart due to respiration during data acquisition to ensure maximum scan efficiency without imposing restrictions to patients. The research issues addressed by the project include: 3D respiratory motion modelling, relaible volume selective RF excitation with real-time translational and rotational tracking and adaptive k-space coverage that is immune to imperfect motion modelling.
