Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed work will enhance the practicability of a physical modelling sound synthesis system developed at York as a musical instrument for use by composers and performers. At present, this system cannot be controlled in real-time, for example during live performance, as no user interface exists for modifying parameters during synthesis. The library of low-level functions available to the user for instrument design will be increased to allow more complex structures to be built up which can be excited in a number of ways. The system will be implemented in parallel on an eight node R10000 processor Silicon Graphics Origin 2000 facility available in the Music Technology Research Group to provide real-time operation. Whilst this machine makes use of a parallelising C++ compiler to distribute its processing load, the mapping problems generic to multiprocessing applications will be considered and efficient mapping strategies will be explored. User interaction with the instrument will be via tactile force feedback user interfaces to enable the construction and playing of virtual instruments. Its effectiveness in composition, live performances and for illustrating basic acoustic principles will be investigated.
