Summary on Grant Application Form
In recent years, a wide variety of systems have been prototyped that are intended to increase motorway efficiency. These include roadside technologies such as Variable Speed Limits and vehicle based systems such as Adaptive Cruise Control. Other more distant systems offer the opportunity to use ITS to link both vehicle and roadside technologies in what is generally termed the Automated Highway. Whilst the potential benefits of such systems may be considerable, there may be disbenefits with some individual systems or combination of systems. Basic independent research is needed to ensure that the implications of future decisions on deployment of ITS on motorways are sound. This platform grant will study driver and system behaviour through experimental and modelling approaches which build upon the considerable EPSRC supported research recently undertaken at TRG.
