Summary on Grant Application Form
This application seeks to establish and operate a state-of-the-art scanning thermal microscope (SThM) facility as a shared resource between four key groups involved in the analysis and development of novel materials at the University of Nottingham. Although a recently introduced technique, SThM has already shown considerable potential in applying well founded thermal characterisation methods at the micron level, with the real prospect of increases in resolution in the near future. The proposed instrumentation will complement and expand upon the internationally competitive work of the applicants, promoting high-quality multi-disciplinary research, with benefit to the University and the UK. The project will focus upon the following, SThM of polymorphic forms in drug crystals, SThM of bioerodable polymers designed for drug release and delivery, SThM imaging theory and topography-thermal data deconvolution, novel biomimetic materials, supercritical fluid modification of polymers and SThM imaging of metal-ceramic biosurfaces. These areas have been chosen to combine both exploitation of current research and to pump-prime new areas of multidisciplinary endeavour in (bio) materials design and application.
