In this project our intention is to develop a basic understanding of three processes that affect size enlargement and size reduction in wet granulators. The three processes are impact deformation, coalescence and fragmentation.We will use a high shear mixer to produce well-characterised granules, and use a two-granule launching mechanism (free impact drooping and a gas gun), to cover the impact velocity range similar to that in granulators. Other objectives are:Examining the effect of impact velocity on the size of the deformed contact area and on the size distribution of the fragments, andExamining the effect of the variation of the constituents of the granules (primary particle sizes, binder amount, viscosity and surface tension) on the value of the restitution coefficient, size of the contact area, fragment size distribution and the critical sticking velocity.Our ultimate aim is to develop a model that accounts for the properties of the constituents of the granule and the impact condition, to predict the outcome process: rebound, sticking or fragmentation.
