Metallate difluoroenol carbamate chemistry has enabled us to synthesise dienophiles which contain two fluorine atoms. We are therefore now able to synthesise highly-functionalised six-membered carbocycles that contain two fluorine atoms using the Diels-Alder reaction. In this project, we wish to optimise the synthesis of our dienophiles by replacing the potentially hazardous organotin chemistry, and perform cycloadditions with a wide range of dienes under Lewis acid-catlysed conditions, learning about the nature of Lewis acid binding along the way. Key elements of functional group chemistry will then be addressed culminating in illustrative racemic syntheses of analogues of cyclitol natural products (Streptol, Zeylenol, Validamine, Valienamine). Importantly, the programme will provide underpinning technology for researchers in areas where fluorine atom incorporation has yielded novel applications compounds, such as medicine (pharmaceuticals) and agrochemicals.
