The overall vision of the proposal is the synthesis of stable polynuclear helical co-ordination complexes, of known and predetermined chirality (handedness). Previously reported structures have been prepared by a self assembly mechanism relying upon kinetic lability in the preparation. However, to avoid racemerisation of the products kinetically inert species are proposed. The use of octahedral transition metal bipyridyl complexes (Rh, Ru and Os) will provide stable materials for these investigations. This will require a new stepwise synthetic strategy to be implemented. The early stages of the project will be to design and prepare a series of suitable building blocks of a known and stable configuration. Once this has been satisfactorily achieved, these units can then be functionalised to form the termini of the proposed molecular structures. Using suitable linkages groups, these are then brought together to form helicates. The choice of linkage used will bring about control of such properties as the distance between metal centres, pitch, hydrophobicity and rigidity. Initially, the preparation of complexes containing a single metal type is envisages, however by mixing the terminal units, heterometallic complexes are possible, which give rise to complexes where electron and energy transfer processes can potentially be observed.
