Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project aims to improve our understanding of phase transformation mechanisms in crystalline materials so that these processes and their impact on engineering materials properties can be predicted quantitatively. The theoretical part of the project will develop a model of transformation processes in terms of line defects in the interface between the transforming regions and the surrounding matrix. This modelling will be based on recent advances made by the applicants regarding the topological character of such line defects. The nucleation and growth of transformed regions will be modelled by linking the atomic-scale topological parameters of line defects to macroscopic descriptions of the resulting deformation and diffusional flux of material. Both displacive and displacive-diffusive transformations will be investigated. The experimental part of the project will obtain direct evidence using transmission electron microscopy of the role of line-defects in phase transformations and compare these observations with predictions of the model. As an example of displacive processes, martensitic transformations in the important shape-memory conditions and chemical composition will be investigated. Displacive-diffusional processes will also be studied in intermatallic alloys such as the gamma-TiAl to alpha2-Ti3Al case.
