Summary on Grant Application Form
This research project seeks to investigate and develop a case based approach to intelligently selecting appropriate heuristics and algorithms (including hybridisations) for a range of time tabling problems (using information about the problems and past experience gained solving 'similar Intelligence and Operational Research to provide a method of solving if solving time tabling problems that operates at a significantly higher level of generality than the on that current technology can support. The aim is to develop an approach that is capable of learning from its own failures as well as successes and that can utilise this learning to pick appropriate methods to solve any particular timetabling problems. This is an ambitious project. A successful outcome would provide a significant step forward in the way that these difficult problems are handled. It would also yield a deeper understanding of the problems and the circumstances under with particular approaches are appropriate for particular instances of the timetabling and scheduling systems and would help to maintain the UK's position of excellence in this large and expanding multi-disciplinary field.
