Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme aims to provide impetus for the age-forming process through the development of new Al-Cu based alloys for damage tolerant aerospace applications, thus providing a novel, cost-effective process route for structural components. A multidisciplinary team using the the best expertise, the best facilities and classified industrial research data (shared in the DARP-AMA network) at 3 universities, industrial partners and DERA will undertake 4 networked projects within the framework of the DARP-AMA. A PDRA at Southampton will focus on analysis and modelling of fatigue and fracture toughness of age-formed alloys including screening of mechanical properties of novel alloys designed for age-forming and a comprehensive assessment of damage tolerance of optimised alloys / process conditions. A second PDRA at Southamton will study microstructure evolution during age-forming in the novel Al alloys including quantitative calorimetric studies and modelling of monotonic properties. A PS at Oxford will work on the analysis of the fine microstructures of the alloys to include 3DAP analysis. A PS at Imperial College will analyse the environmental susceptibility of the novel damage tolerant alloys. This DARP programme will deliver industrially focussed, high quality scientific research to underpin future technology requirements, and well-trained researchers to promote knowledge transfer.
