Summary on Grant Application Form |
Potential for technological advancement lies in developing our ability to control the 'nanometer regime'. Striking progress has been made recently in the chemical synthesis of structurally precise nano-scale species, specifically discrete or polymeric metallo-cages. While this dynamic and emerging field (in which the UK currently has a low profile) has potential for novel catalysis, chemical separations and sensors, the synthetic approaches adopted so far remain narrow in scope, and the products are based on limited types of metal-ligand building blocks. This project will broaden the field with novel approaches, structures and resulting chemical properties. Mainly, it will capitalise on the unique features (eg aromatic channels) present in the unprecedented 2nm metallo-cage [Ag6(triphos) 4 (anion) 4]2+ (1), recently reported by the applicant.Specifically the program will:(1) obtain a basis for developing (1) into a new class of nano-scale cage,(2) test a new large-vertex approach to synthetic zeolites,(3) prepare novel multi-site receptors, and(4) investigate noble gas inclusion, and anti-tumour activity.
