In connection with the Jubilee Line Extension, the research will make new important measurements of longer-term ground and building movements and capture new data on tunnelling operations, protective measures and the progressive development of moderate to severe building damage. The work will draw together, interpret and synthesise existing and new high quality observations of the patterns and amount of developing surface and subsurface ground displacement caused by the construction operations of various types of tunnelling and excavation. These will be related to, and permit the analysis of, developing movements of various building and foundation types, the progressive measures applied to protect them and the observed deformations and damage of the building's facades. Thus the work will advance and capitalise on the considerable body of high quality research data that has been sponsored by EPSRC, by London Underground Limited and, through CIRIA, by industry. CIRIA plans to make the results of the research available through publication of a book presenting these advances in understanding and the resulting case histories, and by holding an international conference.
