Summary on Grant Application Form |
In this project we propose a rigorous 'proof-oc-concept' study of the benefits to be gained from the application of multivariable robust controller design techniques to the problem of flight control system design for civil transport aircraft. The research is to be conducted using industry standard modelling and simulation facilities. Flight control systems will be designed for a 'state-of-the-art' simulation model of a large civil transport aircraft using multivariable robust controller design techniques. Resulting improvements in aircraft flying qualities over those achieved by traditional classical designs, for a range of emergency flight conditions, will be quantified via real time simulation trials.A formalised design cycle for addressing the FCS problem using robust controller design techniques will be defined and adopted. This design cycle will be evaluated and compared with the current industry standard, from a systems engineering point of view, under the headings of modularity, portability and traceability.
