Summary on Grant Application Form |
A gateway in Reading town centre will be chosen and two cameras installed, to obtain synchronised video sequences of all vehicles entering the gateway. Long sequences will be recorded for a range of weather and lighting conditions. Each vehicle entering the gateway will be detected by background subtraction and a parameterised geometric model will be fitted to the images of the moving vehicle. Two complementary model fitting techniques will be investigated: line matching and surface-based matching. Preliminary experiments show that surface based matching is less easily distracted by scene clutter and has a wider catchment area. On the other hand, line-based matching uses a simpler model and the computational requirements are less. The vehicle will be classified according to the shape of the best fitting model. Experiments will be carried out to determine the best models and the best fitting algorithms able to deal with a range of weather and lighting conditions.
