The premature deterioration of concrere structures is a major worldwide problem. The Concrete Durability Group at Imperial College aims to improve understanding of material behaviour to enable more effective/economic durability design, assessment and repair of concrete structures. This requires a multidisciplinary approach involving concrete technology, cement chemistry, transport physics, microstructural characterisation and electrochemistry. Over the past 5 years the Group has averaged 6 staff and 8 research students and has attracted over 2m of funding from a wide range of sources. The Group produces around 20 refereed publications/year and has generally been awarded excellent grades for completed research projects.This application is for a Platform Grant. Funding is requested for 65% of the salaries of a scanning electron microscopist and a numerical modeller for 4 years, plus funds for travel/subsistence. This will provide stability to the Group and will allow a more co-ordinated approach to service life prediction, involving more examination/testing of site concrete and more modelling. It will also enable scoping studies to be carried out prior to full research grant applications and the development of links with key UK and international research teams.
