Summary on Grant Application Form
This programme addresses the need for accurate analysis and design of integrated microwave antenna subsystems with optical excitation. The subsystems considered include optically locked or optically controlled active antennas and arrays. An integrated approach is required to allow optimised configurations to be evolved in the face of strong EM coupling at microwave frequencies. The programme will approach this problem by extending our recent work on analytical tools based on the FD-TD method for electromagnetic structures coupled with first order device models for active antenna development. The method will be further enhanced to include photodiodes as optically excited noisy microwaves sources. This will also build upon our recent work in optical device modelling. Noise and non-linearity in a range of important active antenna subsystems will also be considered. The programme will therefore produce an advanced software tool for analysis and optimisation of optoelectronic active antenna subsystems and an experimental evaluation of a range of novel designs.
