To achieve the objectives the following program of work is proposed.The current transducer transfer function will be first determined through laboratory measurements. Once the transducer transfer function is known then the recorded data of current transients will be analysed to fully quantify and validate the models of propagation of high frequency travelling waves (up to 1 MHz). The busbar impedance will be obtained from the recorded data and related to the known substation geometry and circuit topology to fully characterise and model the interaction of high frequency transients with a substation busbar. Using the refined models of high frequency power system transients, the fundamentals of a single ended travelling wave fault location scheme, that can adjust itself to changes in the power system conditions, will be established and fully validated against the recorded data. The possibility of adopting this technique for transmission line protection will also be explored.Keywords describing areas of proposal.Fault location, power system transients, power system protection.
