Summary on Grant Application Form
Stereoscopic 3D TV is seen as a step towards the next generation audio-visual systems. However, stereoscopic presentation of images does not create conditions in which viewer accommodation and convergence operates in unison. This factor can create disturbing physiological effects after prolong viewing.Researchers at De Montfort University have produced 3D images which are true optical models demonstrating continuous parallax in all directions. This 3D imaging system potentially has enormous implications for leisure and industrial applications and offers the potential of stress-free viewing by more than one person. To realise a 3D TV system, there is need for high resolution display and capture devices and the development of high bandwidth compression scheme which takes full advantage of the unique properties of the recorded images. Other issues identified as vital requirements for an acceptable 3D TV system are the development of 3D video processing which deals with color space transformation and the display of integral 3D integral video signals on conventional monocular TV screens.
