Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the project is to put wave propagation in buried pipes on a rigorous, validated scientific basis. The work will concentrate on iron (cast and ductile) pipes since these are the pipes which are oldest and most prone to leakage. However, plastic pipes will also be considered. The effect of different pipe material properties and soil properties will be investigated, together with the influence of pipe lining materials and corrosion products. The effect of joints, tees, valves and other discontinuities on the wave propagation will also be studied. A particularly important part of the project is the consideration of practical measurement issues such as access points and the effect of variations in pipe and soil condition along the propagation path. Hence, a major part of the project will involve measurements in field conditions. The work will therefore enable the potential of different acoustic wave inspection strategies to be assessed.
