Summary on Grant Application Form
1. Study of alternatives for geometrically non-linear slab formulation. Re-formulation of existing layered slab elements in VULCAN software. Testing using standard techniques.2. Validation studies against previous test results, starting with restricted slab tests, and proceeding to the Cardington composite frame fire tests. Cross-validation against independently developed model at Imperial College, and benchmark studies against previous version of VULCAN to gauge the significance of membrane actions at different stages of fire development.3. Parametric studies of the phenomenon of tensile membrane action using single slabs with different support conditions, with particular attention to stress distributions and ductility. Investigation of the conditions necessary to ensure membrane action can be mobilised in ductile fashion. Studies of the ultimate behaviour and integrity of fire compartments in frame models, and the influence of reinforcement detailing on the ultimate integrity of slabs forming compartment ceilings.4. Investigation of the feasibility of simplified design equations to represent ultimate behaviour of slabs in fire. Development of these equations.5. Development and dissemination of proposals for fire resistant design based on avoidance of loss of integrity of floor slabs in natural fire conditions.
