We will construct an improved dynamic mechanical model of the vocal folds and vocal tract in order to investigate more closely the fluid mechanical and acoustic events that occur during the production of vowel sounds. Mechanical models provide a controlled and robust environment in which to investigate this delicate and complex biomechanical system. our aim is to provide basic data on flow velocity, flow pattern and pressure variations; we will use this information to produce more realistic acoustic source models to drive an existing vocal tract model.Our previous studies have suggested that during vowel production sound may be generated not only at the glottal exit, as assumed in classical voice source models, but also at other locations within the vocal tract. In particular, additional sound sources may occur close to the tract exit around the teeth and lips. we will investigate this phenomenon to determine the mechanism of sound production and the source strength. we will also make measurements on live subjects for comparison with our model data.The measurements made during our study will provide much needed data for improving the naturalness of synthesised speech.
