Summary on Grant Application Form
Since supercritical fluids have been used as media for chemical reactions, control of reaction pathways using pressure or density has been widely investigated. Most of this work concentrated on the critical density, which was attributed to differential solvent stabilisation of the transition states for the two products. Most recently, this effect has been exploited in a dramatic and meaningful way, when it was shown that a diastereometic excess >95% could be obtained for the sulphoxidation of a cysteine derivative. However, studies of a range of reactions shows that stereoselectivity varies widely in both size and direction. The purpose of the present project is to study a wider range of reactions, look for empirical trends in stereoselectivity and then to model it in terms of both transition state theory and conformational variations. The aim is to arrive at protocols for maximising product control so that it can be fully exploited.
