Summary on Grant Application Form |
The potential of a novel D-fibre antenna to be used in radio on fibre applications is to be experimentally and theoretically investigated. The motivation for the proposed programme is that the D-fibre antenna has the capability of operating at a wide bandwidth, large dynamic range and high sensitivity. This type of antenna will overcome the problems of direct modulation, non-linearity and intermodulation. The investigation will begin with an experimental demonstration that the D-fibre antenna is viable and its behaviour will be characterised. The second stage is to develop a rigorous theoretical model for predicting the performance of the D-fibre antenna. the model will then be tested against the measured results and the validated code will then be used to optimise the antenna performance. The first characteristic to be improved will be the sensitivity which will involve a polymer coating investigation. It is also intended to increase the dynamic range of the antenna by researching the optimal phase reference technique to be employed.
