Summary on Grant Application Form |
In the past 10 years, there have been many interests in developing new, more efficient, and cost saving sorbents for the removal of aqueous contaminants. The abundance and low cost of clays make them potential candidates for water and wastewater treatment. The principal objective of this study is to develop and characterise novel Al/Fe-modified-clay adsorbents and evaluate their performance for the removal of organic matter and heavy metals. The proposed research programme will involve the preparation of the modified clay adsorbents by insertion of polymeric Al/Fe species and a suitable quanternized cationic surfactant to produce a sorption zone into which not only positively charged impurities (eg heavy metals), but also negatively charged and hydrophobic impurities can be partitioned. The chemical nature of the novel adsorbents will be characterised by various techniques such as ICP/MS, XRF, XRF, and SEM. Relevant parameters such as surface area and pore size distribution will also be determined. The adsorption capability will be assessed using a standard phenol test combined with the evaluation of removing heavy metals (eg Cu and Zn). If the feasibility study proves successful, a further proposal will be submitted, with the collaboration of Yorkshire Water, for undertaking a full-sclae and detailed research.
