Summary on Grant Application Form |
The more than 10b being spent by the UK Water Industry to acheive compliance with the EU Bathing Water Directive will not, of itself, ensure compliance with those standards. This is because of other, often diffuse, inputs which dominate bacterial inputs to rivers and estuaries under high flow conditions, This project will develop modelling approaches able to accurately predict the impact of alternative treatment regimes, infrastructure improvement and diffuse source control. It will produce a linked catchment/nearshore &/or estuarine model able to accomodate riverine & infrastructure inputs. It must be able to simulate systems which are highly sporadic & also predict water movements under a range of tidal & hydro-meteorological conditions. The project will produce, calibrate and compare deterministic hydrodynamic models with probabilistic, logistic and neural net models. The project will be steered by a Management Group, chaired by a project manager not involved in the research, comprising members of the user community as well as the principle investigators. Outputs will be disseminated via a web page, seminars and peer rev
