Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research deals with the reconstruction of large scale scenes like cultural buildings and industrial plants for virtual reality applications. The input data consists of range and intensity images of the scene. The project aims to enhance the quality of the geometrical modelling and the appearance rendering. It will investigate what domain knowledge such as standard architectural templates and standard relationships between scene features could help achieve a coherent and realistic representation of the scene, and how to optimally combine the domain-knowledge information with the acquired data to achieve this goal. It will also investigate how to appropriately use the visual details contained in the captured scene to alleviate problems arising when the field of view is limited. The achievement of these goals will be carried out through four main tasks, namely, 1) the extraction of architecture-specific features, 2) the registration and fusion of multiple views, 3) the exploitation of architectural templates, and 4) the recovery of scene features from a limited view space. The research results will be illustrated through the development of CAS-like models of typical buildings.
