Summary on Grant Application Form
Nanotechnology is of increasing importance to the fabrication of devices especially in the electronics industry. This proposal is focussed on the exploitation of the self-assembly properties of an important class of soft materials , i.e. block copolymer films, to form ordered arrays of dots for nanolithographic printing. This method will lead to significantly smaller feature sizes than established methods. We will prepare thin films of industrial block copolymers that form a hexagonal pattern by spin casting. By selective etching (via ozonolysis) of one f the minority domains, we will prepare a stamp with an array of nm-size protrusions that can be coated with ink for lithographic printing. This requires the selective wetting of the minority component, this will be ensured by measuring the surface tensions of inks. The nanolithographic printing will be tested by AFM and transmission electron microscopy on the transferred patterns. Having established the technology using commercial inks we will then print solutions of ferrofluids, selected to selectively wet the stamp . This will produce arrays of nm-size magnetic dots. This use of block copolyer dot technology (BCDT) could form the basis of high density magnetic storage media among many other exciting applications.
