Summary on Grant Application Form
In the proposed grant application, we ask for the necessary funding to purchase a state of the art dynamic mechanical thermal analyser, i.e. the new DMTA V from Rheometric Scientific. This will replace outdated existing instrumentation, the Polymer Laboratories DMTA-I which was bought 14 years ago. DMTA analysis has been extensively used by our group over a number of years and it now represents an extremely valuable tool in our research programme to understand blend miscibility, mechanical properties and dynamics of polymeric materials. While we are already carrying out much of this work using the DMTA I, this instrument is becoming increasingly unreliable. The DMTA I is no longer supported by Rheometric Scientific and it is therefore essential that we replace it in the near future. Over the next three years, we expect to use DMTA analysis in the following research areas: (1) Studies of the mechanical properties of composites prepared from cellulose derivatives (2) Studies of composites and polymer blends (3) Physical ageing of polymers and polymer blends and (4) Supramolecular polymers and elastomers.
