This project will seek to develop a range of functionalised intumescent flame retardants which react with appropriate groupings in the selected fibre-forming polymers cellulose, wool keratin and nylons 6 and 6.6. Intumescent derivatised fibres will show enhanced char formation with associated high levels of thermal stability and fire barrier performance. Fibres have been selected because of their functionality and hence potential reactivity with the candidate reactive intumescent species and in the case of polyamide, the need to replace their thermoplastic tendencies with an appropriate char-forming chemistry at temperatures above 200 deg C.Functional intumescent precursors will be based on specially synthesised polyol phosphoryl chorides which will phosphorylate active hydrogen atoms present in polymer chain pendant, end and side groups such as hydroxyl, amine and amide. The fundamental chemistry has been established at Bolton for a single system and this project will extend the science to optimise this and develop a range of appropriate and effective polyol phoshporylated fibre-forming polymers.Enhanced char formation and char oxidation behaviour will be investigated using thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, EDAX, pyrolysis-FTIR and other techniques and fire performance will be established using mass and cone calorimetric techniques.
