Summary on Grant Application Form |
In recent years there has been a growing international concern about siltation rates, exchange and adverse water quality characteristics in ports, harbours, marinas and nearshore coastal embayments, particularly where a natural sill or constructed barrier occurs across the embayment entrance. This project aims to provide coastal zone managers and planners with the capacity to minimise siltation rates and adverse hydro-ecological effects, such as algal blooms in semi-enclosed coastal embayments. The primary aims of the project are: (i) to understand qualitatively and quantitatively the exchange processes of dissolved and particulate matter between coastal zones and semi-enclosed coastal embayments for simple and complex geometries and bathymetries, and (ii) to establish design criteria or operating conditions (e.g. in the operation of tidal barriers) to minimise siltation rates and adverse water quality characteristics for the sustainable development of urban estuarine basins. The project includes laboratory tests, analytical and numerical model studies and the interpretation and analysis of field data.
