This project aims to investigate and evaluate two major enhancements to the current ETSI Hiperlan/2 air interface, namely pre-FFT equalisation and the use of adaptive antennas.To prevent loss of carrier orthogonality, a guard-time equivalent to 25% of the symbol period is specified in the ETSI standard. Recent PhD research at the University of Bristol has shown that novel pre-FFT Decision Feedback Equalisation can be used to reduced (or even remove) the need for this guard-time. This major enhancement can increase data throughout by up to 10%-20%. Adaptive antennas have also been shown to represent a powerful method for enhancing transmission rates and range as well as reducing interference. Through collaboration with DERA and Grundig, this project aims to analyse the performance improvements offered using an 8-element 5GHz antenna array coupled with a pre-FFT equaliser to remove the need for an inefficient guard-time.To enable meaningful results to be generated, the project will assess these new methods using software simulation coupled with a proven software/hardware transmission system.Through attendance and dissemination at ETSI BRAN, the proposed technical programme will make a significant impact on global standardisation activities in the area of wireless LANs.
