Summary on Grant Application Form |
Shadows, windows or light sources can increase the dynamic range of a scene to the extent that the conventional electronic camera will be either saturated or under-exposed in parts of the scene. This type of camera will be superceded by alternative high dynamic range cameras when two key problems have been solved. The first problem is the degradation in image quality caused by variations between pixels in the camera. The second problem is that the dynamic range of the output data is too large for existing displays. This proposal will focus upon solving these two key problems. Firstly, an algorithm will be developed which both corrects for variations between pixels and compresses the output image whilst preserving the subjective quality of the image. Secondly, a new pixel circuit which provides the information required to both correct and compress the image will be designed, built and tested. This work will eventually lead to a sensor for use in digital video cameras suitable for consumer goods, surveillance systems and machine vision applications.
