Summary on Grant Application Form |
The objective of this research is to elucidate the role of thermal and hydrodynamic instabilities in engineering devices. our research will focus on the study of instabilities in the evaporating meniscus in a capillary. The aim in this work will be to investigate these instabilities quantitatively. These instabilities are very often crucial in technical applications such as electronic cooling, materials processing, heating and refrigeration processes, water-cooled nuclear reactors, Rankine cycle power generation, compact heat exchangers, heat pipes, evaporators etc. In pumping devices or in boilers, they are responsible for severe damage. These instabilities may be very efficient in the enhancement of heat and mass transfer, or may be catastrophic if followed by drying out, which might lead to the equipment being damaged. We propose in our project to elucidate those challenging problems through an experimental and theoretical research.
