Summary on Grant Application Form
A new analytical instrument has been developed which can sample airborne particles (in the size range 0.2 to 10 micrometers diameter) and determine each particle's chemical composition by laser desorption and ionisation coupled with time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. We propose to apply such an instrument to the problem of identifying the composition and origins of particulate matter in the roadside atmosphere. While much current interest is focused on health effects of ultrafine particles, the coarser particles which this instrument can analyse are known to make up most of the mass of and contribute significantly to the overall toxicity of, roadside aerosol (this is reflected in the current PM10 and PM2, 4 particulate air quality standards). By refining this instrument in the laboratory, using test aerosol sources to maximise its ability to resolve the various categories of roadside aerosol, and then by taking high time-resolution measurements at the roadside, we aim to improve our understanding of the sources and variability of roadside aerosol. This in turn will allow appropriate targeting of control measures to reduce particulate levels and so enhance the quality of urban life.EngProg\
