Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project is a three year part-time research programme by the principle investigator to investigate the transient flow structures present in the ground vortex region of an impinging jet in cross-flow on a stationary and moving surface. Currently, very limited transient data are available from this type of flog field. Therefore the project aims to use the laser diagnostic measurement techniques PIV and LDA to analyse the flow field. The project will use an existing rig which was set-up to take hot wire and pressure measurements from a previous ground vortex project.Although Cranfield University, Shrivenham, currently has an LDA facility, no PIV facility is available anc therefore part of the initial research programme will involve the purchase and commissioning of a simple digital 2D PIV system. This PIV system will then be used to investigate the transient nature of the flow structures in the ground vortex region in parallel with LDA measurements. A range of flow conditions and jet geometries will be investigated for a single jet configuration where the results are primarily aimed at STOVL aircraft design.
