The laminar burning velocities of realistic natural gases are currently required for the combustion modelling of IC engines and gas turbines. For these models, the effects of fuel composition, air/fuel ratio, and unburnt gas temperature and pressure must be included. Currently, a significant quantity of data on methane/air combustion is available, but only limited data on natural gases.This proposal outlines a programme of work whereby the laminar burning velocities of simulated natural gases would be experimetnally determined over a range of pressures, temperatures and air/fuel ratios using a constant volume combustion vessel. The technique proposed is well suited to the task as it is possible to de-couple the effects of pressure and temperature on the laminar burning velocity. To minimise the effects of byoyancy, where the flame kernal deviates from the ideal case of a sphere and starts to rise, the experiments would be conducted within a micro-gravity environment. The laminar burning velocity would be determined from the pressure/time history of the combustion event.This study would manufacture simulated natural gases for the experiments using mixtures of chemically pure gases. The experimental data would then be mathematically analysed and correlations suitable for combustion models derived.
