Summary on Grant Application Form |
A fluoride excimer laser generating wavelengths of 157 nm, 193 nm, 248 nm and 351 nm will make possible a range of experiments in gas phase radical spectroscopy, reactivity and photochemistry as well as enabling studies of pulsed laser ablation of materials for thin-film deposition. The proposal thus spans the remits of the Chemistry and Materials programmes and involves five groups in the School of Chemistry. In particular, studies will focus on: (i) laser photolysis to generate jet-cooled beams of free radicals such as CH3, ClO and vinyl for photodissociation and cavity ring-down spectroscopy studies; (ii) short wavelength (193- and 157-nm) photodissociation of stable molecules both to study and photochemistry and provide atomic reagents for bimolecular reaction dynamics; (iii) UV and VUV photolysis of stable molecules to generate thermal radicals for chemical kinetics and spectroscopy studies using cavity ring-down spectroscopy; (iv) laser ablation of materials such as graphite, diamond and ZnO under high vacuum, both to deposit thin films on substrates and to enable spectroscopic and mass spectrometric studies of the ablation process.
