Summary on Grant Application Form
Post-depositional effects such as leaching and ageing tend to impart brittleness and seisitivity to clay soils. These types of behaviour are particularly important in situations where significant remoulding or disturbance occurs, eg friction pile installation, insitu testing or soil sampling. These soils can rapidly lose strength and will deform more than would be expected based on observations of the material constituents alone. In order to make accurate and reliable predictions of the effects of sensitive clay soils on engineering structures there is a requirement for suitable models of mechanical behaviour. However, in contrast to reconstituted clay soils, the theoretical framework and constitutive models to describe the stress-strain behaviour of sensitive natural clay soils has yet to be developed. This fundamental study is a major step towards the development of the necessary theoretical framework and constitutive models. The objectives of this programme of research are to investigate the stress-strain behaviour of artificially created sensitive clay soils, using triaxial and oedometer tests, and to use this data to develop a constitutive model to describe the observed laboratory behaviour.EngProg\
